Programs

The Elizabeth Ann Clune Montessori School of Ithaca is comprised of   divisions called levels: Primary, Junior Level, Upper Level, and Middle School. The Primary program is made up of three classrooms that serve children aged 3 through 6. The Junior Level program is made up of three classrooms that serve children aged 6 through 9. The Upper Level program is made of one large class with three separate “clans” serving children aged 9 through 12. The Middle School serves children 12 through 15.

Beginning in the third year of the Primary cycle, students receive formal education with specialty teachers in Art, Music, Physical Education and Spanish. Students also receive Latin instruction beginning in the first year of the Upper Level program. We call these “Specialty Programs”.

Montessori sees the life of the child as a developmental continuum, each stage having its base in the preceding one and in turn preparing for the next. Before the age of 6 a child experiences a sensorial relationship to the environment. His or her task is to sort out reality and acquire skills of coordination, concentration, and independence. He or she is learning WHAT and WHERE. After age 6 the child learns through his or her intellect and imagination. His or her major concerns are WHY, HOW and WHEN.
