Striving Towards Right Of New Generations

In November of 2018 the idea for a group that would support our Middle School teens in finding their voices and working towards, empowerment, for themselves and others was brought to Principal Laura Gottfried by two Middle School students Lily Grover and Alexa Martin. Laura excitedly approved the group and invited Patrice Jennings to work with the students as adult mentor. In December 2018 we held our first meeting and the group currently meets most Tuesdays from 3:15-4:00, and most Thursday’s from 12:15-1:00. Any member of our Middle School community is welcome to join.

At each of our meetings we share a strength we each bring to the group as individuals, and in writing identify areas in which we would like to grow. Monthly we discuss our areas of growth and look to plan how to work on them at our upcoming meetings. At each meeting we try to undertake and action that helps strengthen our community, whether that be our local, regional, national, global or identity communities, and also take some to focus on where we are going in the future with the broadest view.
Issues of concern/areas we want to work in identified by the group include: social justice, human rights, discrimination, access to education, food security, and poverty.

We used one of our meetings to write cards of support (in Spanish) to children and families retained at the US Border, piggy backing on an activity that was initiated locally by a group at the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Ithaca.

In addition: at the staff meeting 1.15.19 representatives from STRONG proposed an idea to our entire staff about teaching students in our Junior Level, Upper Level and Middle School, to use stop sign shaped signs with the phrases “Stop interrupting me.” “No explanation necessary.” and “I just said that.” to ensure that they are being heard and respected in peer interactions throughout the school day. This idea came out of an article that we read at STRONG about the difference in educational environments, as well as the work world for adults, in how girls and women are heard and responded to compared to boys and men. STRONG students made their proposal to all staff, who enthusiastically agreed to have these new materials added to their classrooms. Next steps: STRONG will work with Anne Robbins, our Director of Wellness, to create age appropriate language to use to teach the use of, and response to, these materials to our JL, UL and Middle School students. Then, STRONG members will introduce the materials to each student body. Way to go STRONG!

This past Saturday we attended our first out of school activity; the third annual Women’s March in Seneca Falls NY. Carrying signs we made supporting the rights of all people to be treated equally three students and several staff members braved the chilly temperatures to make a stand.

Upcoming events on our schedule include participating in the annual Planned Parenthood Day of Action in Albany in March to lobby our NYS elected officials in support of women’s health. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about our state government, and to see how we as citizens can approach and be heard by our representatives. Along with others from our region we will meet with our state representatives and rally for women’s health, reproductive health, rights and justice. Ashleigh McGuire, Director of Public affairs for Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes will be coming Thursday February 28th to do a training with our students about the lobbying process prior to the Day of Action.

We are also working on connecting with the local work that is being done around the annual Ithaca Take Back the Night March in April.
